Jomsviking Bracelet Sterling Silver size XL
Jomsviking Armring, Sterling Silver, Viking, Viking Braided Bracelet, Viking Jewellery, Viking Armring, Jomsvikings, Vineta, Wolin
For the creation of the Jomsviking Arm ring, I used a dragon/wolf’s head design based on the findings from the legendary place Vineta, called Jomsborg in the Viking period and now Wolin in Poland. Wolin was a legendary Viking stronghold on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. The legend of the Jomsvikings appears in some of the Icelandic sagas from the 12th and 13th centuries. According to the sagas (particularly the Jómsvíkinga saga, King Olaf Tryggvasson’s Saga, and stories found in the Flatey Book), their stronghold of Jomsborg was located on the southern shore of the Baltic Sea, but its exact location has been disputed by modern historians and archaeologists. Jomsborg is also thought by some researchers to be identical with Jumne, Julin and Vineta, which are mentioned in both Danish and German records from the Middle Ages
The Dragon heads are made in the Mammen style. The Mammen style is named for the ornament on an inlaid axe blade found in a grave at Mammen in Jutland, Denmark, which has been dated to the winter of 970-971 AD. In many ways, the Mammen style is a natural development of the Jelling style, and the two styles can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from each other.
In Viking culture, arm rings were significant multifaceted items used as a display of wealth and status, a form of portable currency known as “hacksilver,” and as symbols for oaths of loyalty and legal agreements. Both men and women wore them.
Arm rings made of precious metals, such as gold and silver, denoted the wearer’s wealth and social standing. More ornate or heavier rings indicated greater importance, and kings and chieftains were often referred to as “ring-givers” in sagas and poetry, a title of respect for their generosity in distributing wealth to their followers.
In a time before a standardised coin system was widespread, arm rings, particularly those made of silver, functioned as a practical, portable form of currency because they could be easily cut into smaller pieces (known as hacksilver) to pay for goods and services in trade.
