The Urnes-style openwork Viking brooch. This brooch was found in Tröllaskógur, Suðurland, Iceland. Brooches with the same exact layout and decorations have also been found around Oslo, Norway. Though these two specimens are not as well preserved as the one from Iceland. A type of openwork brooch shaped like a Great Beast and two snakes intertwined around the animal enveloped in Urnes-style loop-schemes, was another novel creation of this style phase. ‘Great Beast’ motif, ‘ribbon-animals’ and snakes were essential elements in the creation of the figure-ot-eight designs and the more complex multi-loop schemes that form the basis for Urnes-style compositions.
