This beautiful serpent pendant is small, only 25mm long, is incredibly decorated with a very small filigree
My replica is almost a 1:1 (27mm)
The pendant was hung on a wire which was fastened with a thong or string. The pendant contains two green glass beads.
Coiled snake pendants are known from the Late Germanic Iron Age and the Viking Age.
Perhaps the pendant depicts a mythical serpent Jörmungandr also known as the Midgard Serpent or World Serpent. Jörmungandr is a sea serpent, the middle child of Loki and the giantess Angrboða.
In Norse mythology, serpents and dragons embody the destructive phase of the creation-destruction cycle. This means that they represent chaos and cataclysm, but also change and renewal.
The original pendant is located at Sydvestjyske Museer
